With an enduring passion for grappling sports, Abby, our esteemed instructor, has cultivated a remarkable journey through various disciplines, with judo standing out as her initial and enduring love. Abby embarked on her judo odyssey at the age of 6, propelling herself to the national and international stage. Her accolades include an impressive record of five national championship victories and active participation in two cadet world championships. Notably, Abby seamlessly integrated jiu-jitsu into her training, adding depth to her judo groundwork.
Post high school, Abby’s exceptional skills were recognized, leading to her recruitment onto the SFU varsity wrestling team. Over her four years of eligibility, she not only attained All-American status but also secured a national title in her senior year. Grappling, in its diverse forms, has undeniably played a pivotal role in shaping Abby’s life. Now, with immense gratitude, she embraces the opportunity to share this passion with others. Also with her partner Cody, they are both certified personal trainers who are also willing to do personal one on one training for those wanting to level up their fitness, strength or aesthetic goals.
As a member of Burnaby-based private group Ikatan Kali, Alex has been practicing Filipino martial arts for the last eight years. His instructor, Guro Louie Lindo, is a well-known Kali authority; he is highly respected and recognized by FMA practitioners around the world.
8 years of Kali and 30 years of Kyokushin karate coaching and training experience, Sensei Alex goes through the real threats and realities one might face with a weapon based altercation. Methods and strategies to use to survive such a scary situation. This is not for the feint of heart and there will be much detail and focus needed to progress in this class.
Cody has experience in freestyle and collegiate-style wrestling, as well as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Cody has been actively grappling in multiple disciplines for the last 12 years and wrestled varsity for the University of Alberta and Simon Fraser University. Jiu-Jitsu has always been Cody’s passion, but he understands the importance of having a wrestling background to become a more complete grappler. Grappling is a huge part of Cody’s life as he enjoys merging jiu-jitsu and wrestling techniques in all of his classes. Cody believes strongly in grappling as a tool to be used for self-defense because he can dictate the situation and control the threat without harming anyone in the process. Jiu-Jitsu truly is the gentlest mixed martial art but can also be the most effective when applied correctly. Cody is excited to bring his knowledge and skills to his students and ensure that they are fully equipped to face all combative situations. Also with his partner Abby, they are both certified personal trainers who are also willing to do personal one on one training for those wanting to level up their fitness, strength or aesthetic goals.
