A Smart Martial Art for Kids: Confidence, Control, and Self-Defence

Kids Jiu-Jitsu helps children learn how to move with control, stay calm under pressure, and solve physical problems step by step. Instead of relying on punching and kicking, jiu-jitsu for kids teaches positioning, leverage, balance, and technique in a safe, structured setting.

Confidence Through Skill

Confidence grows when children realize they can learn hard things one step at a time.

Problem-Solving Under Pressure

Jiu-jitsu teaches kids to pause, think, adapt, and keep working when something feels difficult.

Safe, Practical Self-Defence

Students learn how to control space, escape bad positions, and protect themselves with awareness and technique.

Why this program works

Kids learn courage without needing to act tough.

In grappling, children learn to stay calm, use their body with control, and keep trying when a position feels difficult. That lesson follows them outside the dojo too, including the days when shoes, homework, and listening skills all decide to test your patience.

Parents often search for kids martial arts or children’s martial arts near them because they want more than an activity. They want structure, confidence, focus, and a place where their child will be challenged with care.

  • Beginner-friendly coaching for children ages 6 and up.
  • Safe kids grappling with clear rules, partner awareness, and close supervision.
  • Practical self-defence skills built around control, escape, and confidence.
  • A supportive dojo environment where effort and respect matter every class.

Honest Answers Before Your Child Steps on the Mats

Choosing a martial art for kids can feel confusing. Karate, jiu-jitsu, BJJ, grappling, self-defence classes near me... suddenly you are learning a new language before your child has even tied a belt. Here is the simple version.

Will my child get tossed around?

No. Beginners start with movement, balance, safe falling, positions, and controlled partner drills. The goal is learning, not chaos with uniforms.

Is this only for naturally athletic kids?

No. Active kids get a healthy outlet, and quieter kids can build confidence without being forced to become loud. Everyone starts with a white belt heart.

Why jiu-jitsu instead of just another sport?

Kids BJJ gives children exercise, problem-solving, focus, teamwork, and practical self-defence in one class. It is physical, but it also asks them to think.

Meet Coach Cody

Coach Cody Osborn – Kids Jiu-Jitsu instructor at Modern Warrior

Kids Jiu-Jitsu at Modern Warrior is led by Cody Osborn, a grappling coach with a deep background in wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. His coaching style emphasizes practical movement, control, safety, and helping students build real skills they can trust.

Cody has trained across multiple grappling disciplines for more than a decade and wrestled varsity at both the University of Alberta and Simon Fraser University. He blends wrestling and jiu-jitsu to help students become more complete grapplers while keeping instruction clear, practical, and beginner-friendly for children.

For parents, that matters. Kids need a coach who can keep the mats disciplined without making the room feel cold. They need someone who can teach serious skills and still remember that a six-year-old may need a little extra guidance tying a belt, finding a water bottle, or remembering which way is left.

  • 12+ years of grappling experience
  • Freestyle & collegiate-style wrestling
  • Varsity at U of A & Simon Fraser
  • Focus on control, safety & real self-defence

Kids Jiu-Jitsu FAQ

Kids jiu-jitsu is a grappling-based martial art that teaches children how to move, control positions, escape safely, and build confidence through technique rather than force. Children’s jiu-jitsu is not about making kids rough. It is about helping them become calmer, more coordinated, and more responsible with their bodies.

Modern Warrior's kids programs are for children ages 6 and up. If you are wondering when kids can start jiu-jitsu, the honest answer is that age matters, but readiness matters too. A free intro class is the best way to meet the coach and see how your child responds to the class structure.

No. Beginners are welcome, and classes are structured to help children learn step by step. Your child does not need previous martial arts experience, perfect focus, or a secret basement training montage.

Yes, jiu-jitsu can be safe for kids when classes are age-appropriate, closely supervised, and built around control, safety, and respect. The same answer applies if you hear it called kids BJJ: the class environment matters more than the label. Read more about how to choose the right martial art for your child.

Jiu-jitsu can be very good for kids because it teaches confidence, coordination, self-control, problem-solving, and respect for training partners. It gives children a physical outlet while helping them learn how to stay calm and work through difficulty. That is useful on the mats, at school, and during the dramatic search for a missing sock five minutes before leaving the house.

Both can be excellent. Kids Jiu-Jitsu focuses more on grappling, control, escapes, and ground-based self-defence. Kids Karate focuses more on striking, discipline, forms, and traditional karate structure. The right choice depends on your child's personality and goals, not on which program sounds cooler on the ride home.

Comfortable athletic clothing and a water bottle are enough for the intro class. The team can guide you on next steps after that. If your child is nervous, that is normal. Many good martial journeys begin with a nervous first step.

The kids membership shown on this page is $220 per month and includes access to Kids Karate and Kids Jiu-Jitsu & Grappling. We recommend starting with a free intro class first so your child can try the program before you commit.

Many families start with two classes per week for consistency and steady progress. Training on both Monday and Wednesday helps children build momentum, remember the material, and turn “I tried it once” into real growth.

Use the booking form or contact button to reserve a free introductory class and choose a suitable day. Bring your questions, bring your child, and let the first class show you whether the dojo feels right.
