Inside and outside leg trips: ouchi gari and osoto gari
Compare three partner demonstrations: the step for an inside trip, the angle of an outside trip, and the hip position that makes room for the leg. The inside trip is the ouchi gari shape. The outside trip is osoto gari.
Step in for the inside trip
Watch the feet before you watch the finish. This inside leg trip is the shape people look up as ouchi gari. The coach shows what happens when he reaches for a leg: his body stays too far away. With an overhook in place, he takes a short step that brings his partner's leg forward. Now he looks toward his foot and brings his partner down.
Change the angle for the outside trip
In the second demonstration, the coach first pulls straight towards himself. His partner can meet that pull with his full weight. A pull at an angle changes where the coach can stand: he reaches the outside of the partner instead of staying directly in front. That angle is what makes room for the outside trip, osoto gari.
Check the space between the hips
The final clip shows a different detail of the same outside trip, osoto gari. Pause when the coach brings his hips alongside his partner's. From there the leg can curl back. When the hips stay apart, he has to reach for the leg instead. In class, ask your partner to pause at the entry so your coach can check that distance.
