New Mats, Renewed Dojo: A Better Place to Train Martial Arts in New Westminster
New Mats, Renewed Dojo: A Better Place to Train in New Westminster
We just upgraded the training floor at Modern Warrior Academy with new professional mats. It is a small thing you feel the second you step on — and it makes our New Westminster dojo a safer, cleaner, better place to learn martial arts. Watch the before-and-after.
We Refreshed the Floor You Train On
When you walk into a martial arts gym, the floor is the first thing your body trusts. It is where you stand, move, fall, roll, and reset hundreds of times in a single class. So when it was time to renew our space, we started where it matters most: new mats across the training floor.
The video above is the honest version — the old surface, then the same room after the new mats went down. No staging, no filler. Just the room our students actually train in, looking and feeling the way a serious New Westminster dojo should.
Why Good Mats Matter More Than People Think
New mats are not about looks. In martial arts, the surface under your feet is part of your safety equipment. A consistent, properly cushioned floor changes how confidently a beginner moves and how hard a regular can push.
Throws, takedowns, and breakfalls land on a forgiving, even surface — which matters most for newer students.
Stable, grippy mats mean cleaner footwork for striking and no nervous slipping during drills.
A fresh, sealed surface is easier to keep clean — a real concern for grappling and kids classes.
The short version: a good floor lets you focus on technique instead of worrying about the ground. That is the whole point of upgrading it.
What This Means for Every Class
The new floor isn't for one program — it's the foundation for all of them. Here is how it shows up across the schedule:
- Grappling and jiu-jitsu: the biggest beneficiaries. Live rolling, guard work, and takedowns all feel safer on a proper mat. See our adult jiu-jitsu in New Westminster and kids jiu-jitsu classes.
- Karate: stances, kihon, and kata need a stable, consistent base. Explore adult Seiyu karate and kids karate.
- Striking: clean footwork on a grippy floor for kickboxing, Muay Thai, and boxing.
- Kids and families: parents notice a clean, safe floor immediately. It is one less thing to worry about when your child starts training.

Choosing a Martial Arts Gym in New Westminster
If you are searching for a "martial arts gym near me," the building matters more than the marketing. When you visit any school — ours or anyone else's — it is worth looking past the website and checking the room itself. A quick walkthrough checklist:
- Is the training floor clean, even, and in good condition?
- Do the mats feel safe for falls, rolling, and beginners?
- Is the space cared for, or just "good enough"?
- Are coaches present, watching, and correcting on the floor?
- Do beginners and kids look comfortable, not intimidated?
We invested in the new mats because we hold ourselves to that same checklist. A dojo that respects its students keeps the space they train in worth respecting too.
Come Stand on It Yourself
Photos and video only go so far. The best way to judge a martial arts gym is to walk in, feel the floor, meet the coaches, and watch a class in motion.
